| Viewable from Kirkwood Boulevard, the Wellness Center will serve as the north gateway to Kirkwood’s Cedar Rapids campus. The one story building will be constructed primarily of precast concrete, metal panels and a high performance glazing system. Retention ponds with lighted fountains to the west add to the dramatic affect of the setting. The facility houses a 200 meter running track which is central in dictating the overall form of the building. Also included is a cardiovascular room with a weight training area, an aerobics room, three basketball courts (two with wood floors, one with synthetic flooring) and generous locker rooms. An outdoor sand volleyball court has also been implemented. Translucent glazed partitions allow day lighting to permeate to the building’s core while delivering privacy in necessary areas. Other materials used in the interior include exposed anodized aluminum framing systems, glass mosaic tiles and quartz solid surfacing. All of these materials work together to create a look and feel that is light, airy, high-tech and easily maintained. The ultra-modern and generously-sized ‘hang-out spot’ is located near the entrance. It organizes the traffic flow and provides a large transitional space for those entering and exiting. A ten-foot projection screen and comfortable lounge seating encourage guests to linger and interact. The facility was created to serve as a value-added amenity to the student population and Kirkwood staff. This progressive project serves Kirkwood secondarily as a recruitment and retention tool.
