The recreation center, which is actually an addition to an existing field house, serves a student population of over 1400 and ten percent, or five hundred, Sioux Center residents hold private memberships. The central focus of the building’s interior is a vast open space enclosing a 200-meter running track. The inner portion of the track holds three multipurpose courts, which are adaptable to basketball, volleyball and tennis. Surrounding the track is a lobby area with control station, 3 racquetball courts, gymnastics area, golf simulator, long and high jump areas and batting cages. The entire central space is divisible by an electrically operated curtain system. Expanses of windows at each end of the running track provide a very open quality to this multi-use space. Other rooms in the center are dedicated to specific functions such as a weight training room, aerobic fitness room, aerobic dance room, athletic office cluster, and various locker rooms. Since completion in 1997, the Recreation Center has grown in popularity and is now considered a major draw in the college’s ongoing recruitment efforts. The facility has also provided a popular gathering place not only for students, but the community as a whole, and has become one of the college’s best public relations tools. |
