The Advanced Sciences Building for Western Iowa Tech Community College is a 78,000 square feet facility that connects two existing buildings. The addition houses programs in advanced manufacturing, life sciences, biotechnology and nursing and allied health. It also adds four lecture classrooms and an emergency medical service lab and adjoining classrooms. One unique feature of the building is an open art gallery with natural lighting provided by continuous skylights. The exterior architecture of the existing building was incorporated into the interior of this space, producing a rhythmic progression which connects this addition to the former gallery space. The new facility offers a first-class environment, using state-of-the-art teaching technologies. The new classrooms utilize wireless networking, integrated multimedia systems for each teaching space, and a card access system for securing the building. The building also employs several energy saving techniques including lighting control via the building energy management system, daylight harvesting, and occupancy sensors. The mechanical system also utilizes high efficiency gas fired boilers for heating and a screw type chiller for cooling, with the outside air pre-heated and pre-cooled with an air to air heat exchanger. The Advanced Sciences Building provides learning opportunities for forward-thinking students, and equips them with cutting edge skills in one of the most advanced programs in the region.
