The main challenge of this project was to create a design that reflected the quaint character of the original café while fitting appropriately in the much larger scale of the new structure in which it now resides. The business previously operated on this site in an old house in the middle of a central business district. It closed to make way for a new parking structure. The parking structure was designed with commercial at its perimeter to allow for the installation of businesses, like this one, displaced by its construction. Images from the Arts and Crafts movement were used as a point of departure. Concrete columns were stained and bound with wood trim and stainless steel to soften them and give them scale. The high volume of the main dining area, with windows extending twenty feet above the floor, gives the main dining area the feel of an outdoor café. Stained concrete floors and a draped canopy over the serving line reinforce this feeling. A smaller scale dining mezzanine overlooks the main dining area with custom siding doors providing screening for private events while an intimate parlor with soft seating and artwork display provides a third dining atmosphere.
