“Flexible, expandable and economical.”  Those were the directions given to the architect for this project.  The 6,100 square foot facility uniquely combines the library with a gymnasium, fitness center and meeting rooms.  Future plans include adding a swimming pool and city offices.  As well as a call for doubling the size of the library and adding cable television studios for public access programs originating from the community center.

The library is a “supermarket of information” and organized accordingly.  The circulation desk, located near the entrance, is the hub with visual control of the whole facility.  Patrons can drop off books or check out new materials quickly, or if they choose, browse the internet in the computer room.  Some like to peruse the newspaper in the reading room while children play with hamsters and rabbits in the sun-filled children’s corner.

Completed in the spring of 1997 for an amazingly low $65 per square foot, this library is a model for many other communities hoping to capture the same excitement.
