The totality of this project includes a dramatic aesthetic change, a more than doubling of the existing square footage and a complete renovation of the existing structure. Exterior materials of brick, stone and a standing seam metal roof were selected to unite the library with the remainder of the civic beltway on which the library is located. The floor plan of the structure is asymmetrical, informal and open and allows easy way-finding and orientation for patrons. A central rotunda serves as the core of the plan and functions as a transitional space for circulation, informal socializing and waiting. It also provides open views to all primary functions of the main level. Amenities such as a fireplace lounge and a coffee shop/patio offer perks beyond traditional library services. Additionally, public meeting space is increased significantly. These spaces are accessible while the library is in operation and while it is closed.
